Lisa is a physiotherapist with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy), Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Exercise and Sport Science), Masters of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) and PhD. She is both a clinician and a researcher with over 25 years experience in the area of spinal cord injuries. She is primarily interested in clinical trials designed to determine the effectiveness of different physiotherapy interventions for people with spinal cord injury. She has research experience in a diverse range of topics including contracture and hand management of people with tetraplegia, orthotic gait along with exercise and respiratory physiology. She teaches widely both nationally and internationally, and has been the recipient of numerous grants and scholarships. She initiated and continues to manage a website of physiotherapy exercises appropriate for people with neurological conditions (http://www.physiotherapyexercises.com/). In addition, she has sole authored a comprehensive text book on physiotherapy management of spinal cord injuries, details below. Lisa sits on the editorial boards of Spinal Cord, Journal of Physiotherapy and the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy.

Harvey L (2008). (Book) Management of people with spinal cord injuries: a guide for physiotherapists. (Elsevier: London. ISBN-13: 978 0 443 06858 4)

Exert from backcover of the book: Associate Professor Lisa Harvey combines 25 years of clinical, research and teaching experience to provide physiotherapists with an innovative five-step approach to the physiotherapy management of people with SCI.

Based on the International Classification of Functioning, this approach emphasizes the importance of setting goals which are purposeful and meaningful to the patient. These goals are related to performance of motor tasks analysed in terms of six key impairments. The assessment and treatment of each of these impairments for people with SCI is described in the book.

Associate Professor Lisa Harvey develops readers’ problem-solving skills equipping them to manage all types of spinal cord injuries. Central to these skills is an understanding of how people with different patterns of paralysis perform motor tasks and the importance of different muscles for motor tasks.

This book is for students and junior physiotherapists with little or no experience in the area of spinal cord injury but with a general understanding of the principles of physiotherapy. It is also a useful resource for experienced clinicians keen to explore the evidence base of different physiotherapy interventions.

Associate Professor
MBBS PhD GradDipAppSc (ExSpSc) FAFRM(RACP) FACRM

James is a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, with extensive clinical experience and research expertise in the field of spinal cord injury medicine and rehabilitation, having worked across the continuum of care in acute hospital, sub-acute rehabilitation and community outreach services. He is Director of the NSW State Spinal Cord Injury Service, Agency for Clinical Innovation. Prior to taking up his current role, he was Medical Director of the Moorong Spinal Unit at the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney, between 1996 and 2006, providing inpatient rehabilitation to a majority of spinal cord injured clients in NSW, and also working at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Combining a continuing clinical involvement (currently as the Senior Medical Specialist for the NSW Spinal Outreach Service) with service and academic roles affords Associate Professor Middleton a unique opportunity as a committed clinician-researcher to undertake collaborative interdisciplinary research. His research is broadly focused on areas including management systems, functional, psychological, health and participation outcomes, pain management, health service delivery and utilization, quality of life, life expectancy and use of assistive technologies, such as functional electrical stimulation.

James is Chief Investigator for a 2012-2015 NHMRC Partnership Project entitled ‘Right care, right time, right place: Improving outcomes for people with spinal cord injury through early intervention and improved access to specialised care’, examining timeliness of access and quality of care, rate limiting steps and decision-making processes along the early care pathway from scene of injury to definitive treatment in a specialized Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and resultant health outcomes following traumatic spinal cord injury. It involves collaboration among key stakeholders responsible for and interested in health services provision, funding, policy development and research into care for people with SCI. The study will collect data in NSW and Victoria with existing no-fault based lifetime care schemes and where Major Trauma Services and their relation to the specialised SCIUs are configured differently, allowing for comparison of triage protocols, transport times, bypass and inter-hospital transfer policies and processes, and patterns of care.

Professor Craig was the Professor of Behavioural Sciences in the Department of Medical and Molecular Biosciences, University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) from 1999 to 2007. He also held the position of Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Science, UTS from 2001 to 2005, and was founding chair of the UTS Human Research Ethics Committee from 1993 to 2001. He was Alternate Dean, University Graduate School, UTS from 2002-2005, and was acting Dean of Science for various times between 2001-2004. Professor Craig was invited to take up a visiting Professorship in South-West University (SWU), Bulgaria 2002, and was granted an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) in 2002 for his contribution to neurological research by SWU.

In mid 2007, Professor Craig left his UTS Professorship in order to join colleagues at the Rehabilitation Studies Unit, as an Honorary Professor. In addition to working as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the READ Clinic where he treats psychological injury (eg. depression, PTSD) arising from physical injury such as spinal cord injury, head injury, musculoskeletal injuries, and problems of chronic pain, he is devoting his time to research in the area of neurological disorders, specifically in the field of psychological injury arising from physical injury (eg. spinal cord injury). For instance, his team was the first to mount, in Australia and overseas, a prospective study of psychological adjustment and treatment from admission to 6 years after a spinal cord injury. He established the efficacy of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for improving adjustment to SCI, and he showed that brain wave activity (EEG) is substantially altered as a result of suffering a SCI. He has also found links between neuropathic pain and brain wave activity in SCI people, and has studied the association between chronic fatigue, quality of life, feelings of helplessness (self efficacy) and pain in people with SCI. He also developed and co-invented “hands-free” control technology known as the Mind Switch. The Mind Switch uses conscious control of brain wave activity and allows a severely disabled persons such as someone with tetraplegia to manipulate devices such as their TV, PC, room lights and so on. The Mind Switch to date is the only novel brain computer interface hands-free control technology that has undergone a clinical trial (Craig et al., 2002) and shown to be effective.

Professor Craig has been an Editor-in-Chief for an international Elsevier Journal (2007-2011). He has written invited papers on neurological disorder in journals such as Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, and Advances in Psychiatric Treatment, a commissioned paper for the College of Psychiatry, UK. He has published over 180 refereed journal papers, book chapters, and refereed conference papers. He has won over $6 million from the Australian Research Council in the past 15 years and graduated over 20 Post Graduate students. He has also had significant funding from the NSW State Government for SCI research with colleagues, attaining a $1 million grant as a Chief Investigator and a $2 million grant as a co-investigator in 2005-2009. He has also received over $1 million in grant funding from the MAA and LTCSA from 1997 to 2012 for his injury related research.
